Palos Verdes is a peninsula presiding over the South Bay from an elevation of 1,450 feet at its summit. Further inland, Palos Verdes is a green oasis of horse trails and nature walks amidst ancient Eucalyptus trees, living up to its name which means “green woods”. Part of the original Dominguez and Sepulveda ranchos, the peninsula was bought by a New York syndicate in the early 20th century for a price that would barely buy a single-family home in the area today. The Olmsted pothers, designers of Manhattan’s Central Park, designed the planned communities providing strong architectural themes and preserving green open space. Such is the respect for nature that most streets are not lit after dark, preserving the rural atmosphere of this nature preserve.
