Brentwood Luxury Real Estate

Located in the foothills of the Santa Monica Mountains with Mulholland Drive to the north, Brentwood is west of Bel Air, east of Topanga State Park and has Wilshire Boulevard to the south. It is part of the affluent “Three Bs” along with Beverly Hills and Bel Air. Brentwood offers a mixture of upscale homes including luxury condos, traditional and Spanish style residences, many with panoramic ocean views. This well-heeled area has a longer history than much of LA, being originally sold in parcels after the Mexican-American War in 1848. The area developed as a small community around the Home for Disabled Soldiers and Sailors in the 1880s. At that time the town was known as Westgate and had British-themed street names such as Gorham and Bristol. The Brentwood Country Club, now Sunset Fields Golf Club, hosted some of the athletics events during the 1932 Summer Olympics with the Olympic Village located on the current country club site.

Disaster struck in 1961 when a fire fanned by the Santa Ana winds destroyed many homes along with over 16,000 acres of land. The area recovered and now boasts many desirable single-family homes in the northern canyons, with a mix of luxury apartments and single-family residences south of Sunset. The hilly area south of San Vicente Blvd is given over mostly to apartments. Prosperous commercial districts line the main thoroughfares of San Vicente, Sunset and Wilshire Boulevards. Some of Brentwood’s assets include higher-than-average school district performances in its seven private and two public schools, and a low rating on the crime index.

Brentwood is one of Los Angeles’ wealthiest areas favored by affluent business professionals, political figures, executives and celebrities. Its most infamous resident was O.J. Simpson who gave the area a great deal of publicity during his lengthy trial. Other famous residents past and present include Jim Carrey, Cindy Crawford, Harrison Ford and Arnold Schwarzenegger.
